LET’S WORK IT OUT
Your numbers, your answer.
THE WHY BEHIND THE ANSWER
How it works.
Scientific notation separates a number into a coefficient and a power of ten. Negative exponents describe small non-zero magnitudes.
THE FORMULAnumber = coefficient × 10^exponent, with 1 ≤ |coefficient| < 10
Worked example
1,250,000 = 1.25 × 10⁶.
Good to know
This tool uses the precision available in a JavaScript number. Zero is shown as 0 × 10⁰.
ONE MORE THING
What does a negative exponent mean?
A negative exponent means division by a power of ten: 10⁻³ equals 0.001.
