How it works.
For addition and subtraction, first use a common denominator. For multiplication, multiply numerators and denominators; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal.

Worked example
1/2 + 3/4 = 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4.

Denominators cannot be zero. The result is reduced to lowest terms.

Yes. An improper fraction has a numerator whose magnitude is at least as large as its denominator.
