THE WHY BEHIND THE ANSWER

How it works.

In a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the two perpendicular sides.

THE FORMULAc = √(a² + b²)

Worked example

With legs 3 and 4, c = √(9 + 16) = 5.

Good to know

Both legs must use the same unit. The formula applies to right triangles.

ONE MORE THING

Which side is the hypotenuse?

It is the side opposite the right angle and the longest side of a non-degenerate right triangle.
