How it works.
A percentage is a fraction out of 100. Choose whether you want a percentage of a number, the percentage one number represents of another, or the change from an original value to a new value.
THE FORMULAPercentage of a number = percentage ÷ 100 × whole; percentage of a total = part ÷ whole × 100
Worked example
15% of 240 is 36. In reverse, 36 is 15% of 240. Going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase.
Good to know
For change, the starting value is the reference and must be positive. For a part of a whole, the whole cannot be zero.
