THE WHY BEHIND THE ANSWER

How it works.

Slope measures vertical change per unit of horizontal change. Once you have the slope, substitute either point to find the y-intercept.

THE FORMULASlope m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁)

Worked example

Points (1, 2) and (4, 8) have slope 6 ÷ 3 = 2 and equation y = 2x.

Good to know

A vertical line has an undefined slope and is written as x = a constant.

ONE MORE THING

What happens if both points are the same?

One point alone does not determine a unique line, so enter two distinct points.
