THE WHY BEHIND THE ANSWER
How it works.
The mean uses every value. The median is the middle value after sorting; for an even-sized set, it is the mean of the two middle values.
THE FORMULAMean = sum of values ÷ number of values
Worked example
For 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, the sum is 35 and the mean and median are both 7.
Good to know
A very large or small value can move the mean more than the median.
